2008

"Big W" Awards
Competing against dozens of advertising and marketing firms, Westchester County’s efforts have been recognized with "Big W" awards at an Advertising Club of Westchester competition.  Celebrating "the art of creativity", the Ad Club was founded in 1968 to promote communication and relations among people in advertising and the related fields in Westchester County and its environs.  As recently as June 2008, the Graphics Print and Web Section, headed by Ruthann Pisano, has been specifically recognized for the design of the county website www.westchestergov.com   From 2001, the Graphics Team had received a dozen more awards at the annual event in the categories of corporate design/identifiication, interactive media, promotional media kits, service brochures and posters, outdoor promotional design, and public service promotions for special events.

Digital Counties Survey Winner, Government Technology

Westchester County named one of top 10 “digital counties” in the U.S. four years in a row by Government Technology.

Selected as one of three US governments to present at the first US-Chinese Digital Government Conference in Beijing.

Best of New York Award – IT Collaboration 

In recognition of DoIT’s Shared Criminal Justice Data Warehouse for demonstrating best IT collaboration among organizations, sponsored by the Center for Digital Government.

2006 National Association of Counties (NACo) Awards (2)

  • For DoIT’s GIS Data-Sharing Program, designed to provide data free of charge to local governments in exchange for their data sets to avoid costly and unnecessary duplication
  • For the Criminal Justice Data Warehouse, a high-tech tool which allows investigators to track down suspects more quickly. A growing number of users can now share all kinds of criminal justice data and quickly search through thousands of data entries from law enforcement agencies throughout the county.  Press release

2005 National Association of Counties (NACo) Awards (2)

  • Awarded “Best in Category” among IT entries for the Community Health Electronic Syndromic Surveillance system (CHESS), a highly sophisticated system that collects electronic data each day from hospitals and outpatient clinics in Westchester and uses these data to track and analyze unusual levels or patterns of disease
  • For the All-Hazards Tracking System, an innovative, Web-based system that coordinates field care by tracking individuals in the event of a chemical, biological or nuclear emergency.

American City and County's 2006 America's Crown Communities Award

In recognition of GIS for providing services to the public through “Mapping Westchester County” ArcIMS program designed to support the county’s efforts in emergency response and public safety, infrastructure management, transportation planning, and land information systems.

Selected to receive the prestigious 2005 “Best of the Web” Award from the New York State Forum in recognition of the county’s Web site.

Oxford International Symposium on E-Government

Norman Jacknis, CIO, was one of only two local government leaders to attend this premier e-government  symposium. Jacknis discussed Westchester’s use of the Internet to enhance democracy. About 35 participants from the U.S. and Europe attended this symposium to learn about the “state of the practice of e-democracy.” Westchester was previously a participant in a National Science Foundation project on electronic democracy.

North America Day

Norman Jacknis, CIO, was the only local government CIO invited to speak at this international symposium in Quebec, Canada, bringing together top IT officials in American, Canadian, and Mexican Governments to discuss common issues.

Best Practices Award

The New York State Forum for Information Resource Management presented this award to Westchester County CIO Norman Jacknis for outstanding leadership to promote effective information resource management in New York State.

Harvard on Hudson

Westchester County Government was the first local government nationwide to host a workshop to explore new technology-enabled forms of cooperation among government agencies and municipalities. Professor Jerry Mechling of Harvard’s John. F. Kennedy School of Government facilitated the one-day workshop and explored how Westchester compares to other governments and what can be gleaned from recent research.

18th Annual Lower Hudson Conference Award for Excellence, Community Documentation and Web Site

The Westchester County Archives and its three collaborator agencies, the Westchester County Historical Society, the National Parks Service HAER Program and the Westchester County Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Conservation were recognized for developing the Virtual Archives Web site on the Historical American Engineering Record of the Bronx River Parkway Reservation within six months of the report's filing, thereby increasing public access to it. Press release

Finalist in E-government Competition

Westchester County’s on-line Community Help Desk was selected as one of eight finalists in a nationwide competition to find the most “innovative and creative uses of e-government.” The Internet-based community Help Desk was chosen from more than 130 proposals entered in the Imagine E-Government Awards Competition, sponsored by the Council for Excellence in Government D.C.

Excellence in the Educational Use of Local Government Records by a Local Government

The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives presented the Westchester County Archives with this annual award.

 

1999

“Access America Community” Recognition

Vice President Al Gore cited Westchester as the nation’s first “Access America Community” for its pioneering work in developing a telecommunications network to connect town halls, schools, libraries, hospitals, and police and fire departments.
